OUR PRACTICE THE DOCTORS BEGAN REFRACTIVE SURGERY IN THE 1970'S, CORRECTING astigmatism following corneal transplantation. Dr. Damiano was the first physician in the state to perform radial keratotomy and was a pioneer in the procedure in the United States having taken the first U.S. course for the procedure, trained by physicians that learned in Russia. Both Drs. Damiano and Forstot were trained to perform the myopia surgery of Barraquer: myopic keratomileusis (MKM). Dr. Forstot was among the first surgeons in the United States to be trained in the technique of epikeratophakia. This technique was used to treat keratoconus, aphakia, and myopia.Dr. Damiano trained in the non-freeze lamellar myopic surgery (Automated Lamellar Keratectomy- ALK). When laser surgery was approved by the FDA, Drs. Damiano and Forstot began performing Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and then Laser in-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK). Dr. Forstot is a proctor and instructor for the Clear Vision Laser Center and VISX. They have been concerned with both safety and efficacy. At the annual meeting of the International Society of Refractive Surgery in 1997, Dr. Damiano discussed the limits of safe corneal tissue excision in laser refractive surgery. Many laser surgeons throughout the world are ignoring these guidelines and some patients may develop significant problems five to ten years later because too much corneal tissue was removed. The doctors have acted as consultants to other physicians, utilizing their expertise to solve problem cases. They have also been consultants for legal cases. Dr. Damiano has developed the only surgical technique that reliably corrects the hyperopia that may occur following radial keratotomy. This surgical procedure appears to strengthen the peripheral cornea and stabilizes fluctuating vision and reduces the far-sightedness and irregular astigmatism. This technique has been employed for over ten years and the results were reported by the doctors in the peer reviewed Journal of Refractive Surgery (Vol. 14:408-413, Jul/Aug,1998). Drs. Damiano and Forstot believe in personalized attention to patient problems and have assembled a dedicated staff, state of the art computerized equipment, and an atmosphere conducive to solving these refractive problems. Because of their extensive experience with refractive surgery, the doctors are dedicated to the safe improvement of a patient's vision.
